STRENGTHEN LOCAL FOOD SYSTEMS
& AGRICULTURE

A strong local food system is essential to Hawaiʻi’s economic resilience, environmental health, and long-term food security. Yet for decades, agriculture has been underprioritized, leaving the state heavily dependent on imported food and vulnerable to supply disruptions, rising costs, and global instability. Taking food security seriously requires sustained attention and meaningful investment.

Strengthening local food systems begins with understanding how food moves from farms to families. Through work connected to the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture & Biosecurity and an internship with the Hawaiʻi Food Hub Hui, Andrew gained firsthand insight into the importance of connecting growers, buyers, and institutions. That experience reinforced the value of engaging directly with farmers, listening to their needs, and shaping policies that reflect on-the-ground realities.

Despite agriculture’s critical role in economic stability, ecological stewardship, and cultural importance, it receives less than one percent of the State budget. This gap weakens local farming and undermines Hawaiʻi’s food security. Addressing it requires investment in infrastructure, land access, and programs that strengthen local supply chains, including farm-to-school initiatives that support both farmers and keiki.

Andrew also supports biosecurity for our island home. In communities like Pālolo, invasive species threaten agriculture, ecosystems, and quality of life. Strengthening prevention and response efforts is essential to protecting Hawaiʻi's environment for future generations.

Andrew worked at the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture & Biosecurity from 2019–2023,

supporting agricultural development and expanding market opportunities for Hawaiʻi farmers.
