AFFORDABLE HOUSING & RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT

Housing lies at the center of HawaiÊ»i’s affordability crisis. Rising rents, home prices, and utility costs are forcing families out of their neighborhoods, making it harder for young people to buy a home and for kÅ«puna to remain in the neighborhoods they love. Addressing this challenge is urgent, and must be addressed through transparency, accountability, and meaningful community input.

Expanding affordable housing should prioritize homes that local families can actually afford, not development that primarily serves outside investors. Growth must be planned in a way that respects neighborhood character and ensures that infrastructure (roads, schools, water systems, and public services) can support new residents. When housing is built without adequate planning, communities and neighborhood-character pay the price.

Andrew supports a balanced approach that increases housing options while strengthening communities, not displacing them. Smart planning and responsible growth can help ensure development works for the people who already call Hawaiʻi and District 21 home.
